DIY Cleaning Solutions

You don’t need fancy cleaning solutions to get a good shine. Common home items such as baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, coffee filters, newspapers, and old socks make for excellent cleaning solutions and tools.

  • Microwave: Microwave 1 cup water and some citrus slices or a few tablespoons of white vinegar on high until the window steams up. Remove bowl and scrub the inside with a sponge.
  • Oven: Empty the oven and coat the interior with a baking soda/water paste (a few tablespoons of baking soda mixed in ½ cup of water). Let sit overnight, then wipe away with a damp sponge and spatula.
  • Windows: Squirt a vinegar and water spray (2 cups water, ¼ cup vinegar, ½ tsp dish soap) onto the window and wipe with newspaper for a streak-free clean.
  • Grill: Remove and scrub the grates with a wire brush and hot water. For a deeper clean, soak them overnight in a 2:1 ratio of vinegar to baking soda.

Remember Nooks & Crannies

The start of a new season is the perfect time to give some attention to the harder-to-reach, overlooked spots.

  • Carpet
  • Pet bed
  • Remote
  • Ceiling fans
  • Light fixtures

Flip The Switch

Now’s the time to reverse items in the house from winter to spring mode. Switch your ceiling fan to rotate counter clockwise and push cool air down toward the floor, cooling down the room. (Reverse it again in winter to circulate rising warm air). Also take the opportunity to flip your mattress each season, head to toe and on each side, to evenly distribute the wear.
