Home Inspiration, how-to

Spring Garden Trends Worthy of a Green Thumbs Up

There’s no better part of your home to experiment with than the garden. We’ve rounded up the top trends from this spring’s Chelsea Flower Show in London that you can adapt at home to create your own plant haven, whether it’s a garden, balcony, or indoor jungle.

Go green

Chelsea was a sanctuary for green this year, a TaskRabbit favourite. Gardens were awash with beautiful trees and plants in lush shades offset by pale yellow and white flowers. Make your space more green with the easy-to-grow plant of the year, Sedum takesimense ATLANTIS.

Reuse and recycle

Sustainability was a key theme, from attempts to reduce the environmental impact of a Chelsea plot to clever recycling inspiration for your outside space. Reclaimed bricks were used to produce a water raised bed system and old oil barrels made for eye catching planters.

Run wild

Overgrown gardens are finally on trend, hurrah! Embrace the beauty of nature and let your native flowers run wild. Spend less time tending to your beds and see what thrives when you leave your garden to grow.

The copper trend is moving from interiors to outside spaces. Hammered copper brings a new dimension to spaces big or small, and a pot is a quick and easy way to bring in the trend. We love lush green plants against copper on balconies, in gardens or as an addition to indoor plant havens.

Create the illusion of space

Set your ground plan on a diagonal to make your space look bigger. Offset this with contrasting materials such as stone, rocks, and reclaimed timber to really open up. You could also add a water feature with decking overhanging to create the impression that the water flows far beyond the confinements of your garden.

Go for drama

If you’ve got the space for trees, experiment with the weird and wonderful such as the monkey puzzle or the red buckeye. Play with height, colours, and stand-out sculptures such as painted black fences and burnt oak timber structures.
