How to Make Coachella Your Home Away from Home

Coachella

Coachella will bring you many things: carefree energy, the best in music today, beautiful California weather, and memories to last for years. But to be comfortable at Coachella, you’ll need to plan ahead. Here’s how to bring the comfort of home with you, even to a camping music festival like Coachella.

Decide where to stay.

You may have to camp offsite if you didn’t book a Coachella campsite along with your tickets. But be realistic: are you more of a glamper than a camper? A local Airbnb, complete with air conditioning and running water, might be a better bet for you—especially if comfort is your priority.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

There’s nothing that can ruin a festival experience faster than dehydration. You might think it’s better to drink less to avoid the line for the bathroom—but it’s a lot better than passing out and missing the whole thing! You can bring empty plastic (but not metal or glass) water bottles and hydration packs like Camelbacks to fill up and avoid dehydration. There are water stations throughout the festival that are free to use; make sure you do! You can also add electrolyte tablets or powder to your water to make hydrating easier.

Eat before you go.

You can’t take outside food or beverages with you on the festival site, so eat a big, protein-packed breakfast before heading to the festival to avoid getting hungry or overspending on festival food.

Wear layers and comfy shoes.

The desert is usually hotter during the day but can get chilly when the sun goes down. Wear light, breathable clothes that can keep you cool all day, but don’t forget a sweater or jacket for when temperatures drop. And don’t forget that your shoes don’t need to be a fashion statement: wear the most comfortable pair that will keep you happy after being on your feet for hours!

Protect yourself from the sun.

Grab a hat and your highest SPF because the desert sun is no joke! Take non-aerosol sunscreen to layer up throughout the day to avoid sunburn. We promise it will be worth it!

Get a portable charger.

You’ll probably be taking plenty of photos and videos, and you’d be lucky for your phone to make it all day on its own! Invest in a good portable charger and keep fully-charged peace of mind.

Stay prepared.

Here’s a list of things to have on hand before heading to the festival grounds:

  • Cash and credit cards
  • Earplugs
  • Rain poncho
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Bug spray
  • Backpack or hands-free crossbody bag
  • Lip balm and eye drops (it’s dry in the desert!)
  • Portable charger
  • Plastic water bottle, bonus points if it’s collapsible!
  • Battery-powered fan
  • Toilet paper (it can’t hurt!)
  • Sunscreen!

And what to pack to keep at your place of lodging:

  • Changes in clothes and shoes for 3 days of the festival. Don’t forget to channel the signature Coachella style.
  • Swimsuit
  • Travel-size toiletries
  • Chargers
  • A deck of cards
  • Medications
  • Electrolytes and vitamins
  • Water bottles — If camping, you can pack a cooler with dry ice to keep them cool.
