Investing in Women: Accelerating Progress on International Women’s Day

Every year on March 8th, the world comes together to celebrate International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the achievements of women and advocating for gender equality. At Taskrabbit, this initiative isn’t just recognized for only a day. The employee-led Women of TR affinity group upholds its mission to build an empowering network of trust and respect for all women at Taskrabbit year-round.

This year, the Women of TR affinity group has gained inspiration from a certain former president’s quote and will kick off the month with the theme of ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.’ With several internal programming events and speakers in place, the Women of TR affinity group will focus on women’s and girls’ organizations for change, women in art and media, as well as support the initiatives of female entrepreneurs.

“Investing in women isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do. When women and girls have the tools, resources, and opportunities to reach their full potential, they drive economic growth, lift up entire communities, and build a better world for all of us. We cannot achieve true progress or inclusive prosperity without unlocking the potential of half of the world’s population.” — former President Barack Obama

How You Can Help Accelerate Progress

Accelerating progress starts with investing in several key initiatives in and outside of the workplace. Here’s how you can help accelerate progress for a more inclusive and equal world year-round.

Education

One of the most impactful ways to accelerate progress is through education. Millions of girls around the world are not in school and deprived of education due to various reasons and barriers. Countries that prioritize girls’ education statistically have lower maternal mortality rates, lower infant mortality rates, and better child nutrition.

Investing in girls’ and women’s education saves lives, empowers them to reach their full potential, and gives them a better future. Education prepares women with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to pursue their dreams, contribute to their communities, and drive economic growth

Equality

Investing in women goes even further. Breaking down barriers also means creating opportunities for women to thrive in all aspects of life, including in the workplace.

Muskan Bansal, engineering manager at Taskrabbit and co-lead of Women of TR says, “Workplaces can establish and enforce gender-inclusive policies that promote equal opportunities and work-life balance by offering flexible work arrangements, parental leave policies and pay transparency to support women’s career advancement and well-being.”

Muskan advocates for workplaces to provide mentorship opportunities and sponsorship programs, similar to the several that Taskrabbit offers.

“Pairing women with senior leaders or mentors who can provide guidance, advocacy, and networking opportunities can help them navigate challenges, build confidence, and advance in their careers,” she says.

Health

Investing in women also means prioritizing women’s health and well-being. It means ensuring access to quality healthcare, reproductive rights, and maternal care. Addressing the unique challenges that women face, including gender-based violence and discrimination, will only help advance communities by giving women opportunities to grow and thrive with the support of quality healthcare.

Leadership

When women lead, everyone wins. Women’s representation is increasingly important, especially in leadership roles. By combating outdated thinking and finding clear solutions, meaningful progress towards gender equality can be made.

“Workplaces can invest in leadership development programs tailored for women, including training workshops, seminars, and coaching sessions,” says Muskan. “By providing women with skills like leadership, strategic thinking, and negotiation, we can nurture a diverse talent pool and encourage more gender diversity in leadership roles.”

Community

Investing in women is not just the responsibility of governments or organizations; it’s a huge effort that requires the involvement of everyone in their local communities. You can support companies that prioritize gender equality and women’s empowerment. Continue to push for diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Advocate for policies that advance women’s rights and gender equality.

Moral of the Story: Invest in Women Year-Round

On this International Women’s Day, let’s recommit ourselves to investing in women and accelerating progress towards equality. Understand and recognize the immense potential of women and girls. Strive to do what you can to help create a future where every woman and girl can thrive, regardless of their background or circumstances. Together, let’s invest in women and unleash their power to create positive change, accelerate progress, and build a better world for all.
