Move-in day has a reputation. Overflowing SUVs, a dresser that definitely won’t fit through the door, and someone standing in a hallway holding a lamp while everyone else argues about elevators.
We looked at real Taskrabbit bookings tied to college move-in from July through mid-August to see what people actually hire help for. Not a generic packing checklist, but the real tasks that got booked. Here’s what showed up most.
The most-booked college move-in tasks
Out of hundreds of move-in related jobs booked on Taskrabbit this summer, a few categories did most of the heavy lifting (literally):
- Truck-assisted help moving: about a third of all bookings. A Tasker shows up with their own truck or van and handles the loading, driving, and unloading, everything from mini fridges to bed frames, so nobody has to rent a truck.
- Furniture assembly: roughly one in four bookings. Dorm and apartment furniture almost always ships flat, so someone needs to build it.
- Help moving without a truck: about 13%. Short trips within a building or across campus, no vehicle required.
- Cleaning: about 8%. Move-in and move-out cleans, plus the occasional “get this dorm bathroom livable” request.
- Heavy lifting and loading: about 4%, for the couches and mattresses that need extra hands.
- General mounting: about 3%, covering shelves, mirrors, and curtain rods.
- Errands: about 3%, mostly package pickups and drop-offs at the dorm.
- Wallpapering, packing and unpacking, organization, and TV mounting each made up smaller slices, but together they tell a clear story: move-in help isn’t just about the truck. It’s about making a small room feel like home fast.
A closer look at the top tasks
Here’s what these bookings actually looked like in practice.
Moving and hauling
This is the backbone of move-in day, and it’s not always a full household move. A lot of these bookings were short, specific hauls: a handful of boxes, a mattress and a desk, or a couch that needed to go up three flights with no elevator in sight. If you can hire local moving help, you can skip renting a truck altogether.
Furniture assembly
A lot of families fly in, head straight to IKEA or order everything to arrive the same week, and need it built fast so the room is livable before they have to leave. We saw bookings for the classic bed frame and desk combo, but also bunk beds for shared rooms and fully decked-out setups with a vanity, a nightstand, and a dresser all at once. A Tasker who handles furniture assembly can get started on putting it all together while you’re still unloading the car.
Cleaning
Dorms sit empty all summer, and that shows. Several bookings were simple asks: clean the room and bathroom before move-in so it doesn’t feel like someone else’s leftover mess. Others were move-out cleans for the apartment or house someone just left. Either way, move-in and move-out cleaning covers both ends of the transition.
Mounting and wallpaper
Dorm rooms are small, so people get creative. A few bookings were for peel-and-stick wallpaper on a single accent wall, the kind of small, high-impact project that makes a shared room feel less institutional. Others were for TV mounting, including a few ambitious multi-monitor setups that needed a level hand and the right hardware.
Errands
Not every move-in task happens in person. Some bookings were for picking up a last-minute necessity or dropping off something forgotten, handled by someone nearby when the person moving in couldn’t get there themselves. That’s the kind of last-minute errand running that saves a trip.
The most creative college move-in bookings
Most of the requests were straightforward, but a few stood out:
- One booking was for a bidet installation in a graduate student’s dorm bathroom, no tools needed beyond what a Tasker brings.
- Another needed a dorm window enclosed with plastic and blackout material using special tape, just to fit a portable air conditioner.
- A Pottery Barn headboard needed two custom wood pieces attached just so it would fit a dorm bed frame.
- A Tasker was sent to a hotel to pick up around 20 packages, since the family had arranged with the hotel to receive shipments ahead of time when there was no dorm address to ship to yet.
If a task doesn’t fit a neat category, there’s a good chance someone’s still figured out how to book it.
How to book help for move-in day
Most of these bookings happen close to move-in day itself, not weeks ahead of time. Describe the task and select a date and time, then see availability from Taskers nearby. You can book anywhere from the same day up to about two weeks out, depending on what fits your move-in schedule. You’ll also specify where the task happens, whether that’s at home to help prep and load the car or truck, or right at the college campus once you arrive.
Whether it’s one job or a few stacked together (say, furniture assembly right after a truck-assisted move), you can hire separately for each piece or find a Tasker who covers it all.

FAQs about college moving tasks
How much does it cost to hire help for college move-in?
Rates vary by city and task, but most college move-in bookings (moving help, furniture assembly, cleaning) start in the $30 to $50 per hour range. You’ll see exact rates and Tasker profiles before you book.
Can someone assemble dorm furniture the same day it arrives?
Often, yes. Furniture assembly is one of the most frequently same-day booked tasks on Taskrabbit, which helps when everything ships the week before move-in.
Do I need to be there while a Tasker cleans or assembles furniture?
Not necessarily. You can coordinate access with your Tasker ahead of time and confirm details through chat, whether that’s a building sign-in process or where to find the extra Allen key.
Can a Tasker help if the student is moving in without family there?
Yes. Plenty of bookings come from students, roommates, or whoever’s local and available. You can book on someone else’s behalf too, as long as the details and address are correct.
What if I only need help with one or two things, not the whole move?
That’s most of what we saw in the data. Bookings ranged from a single furniture assembly task to a full day of moving and cleaning combined. You can book exactly what you need, nothing more.
