How to Choose the Perfect Paint Color

You already know that paint is one of the most transformational design tools in your toolkit — now it’s time for paint shopping!

You could head to the hardware store and drown in countless paint color options, walking away with color chips that are almost too small to be helpful. Or you could shop a curated selection of timeless colors while never leaving your couch through Backdrop

If you couldn’t tell, we prefer the latter! But no matter how you decide to shop, here are some guidelines to keep in mind when selecting a color for your space.

Think About Your Space Holistically

What other accents and furniture will there be in the room you’re painting? If you have a lot of strong color accents, a neutral or white backdrop can be the perfect foundation. If not, brighter-colored paint is the perfect way to add life and vibrancy to a space in a cost-effective way.

Know the Rules, But Don’t Be Afraid to Break Them

There are a few guidelines that are good to keep in mind with painting various spaces in your home. But ultimately, you can deviate from this list and go with what speaks to you. It also helps to look at real-life examples, like the numerous examples on Backdrop’s site

Light colors can make a space feel bigger

Warmer undertones invite coziness, while cooler colors are more modern and architectural

Darker colors in hallways can make the room at the end feel larger as it opens up

Vibrant colors like bright reds are great for dining rooms but can be harsh in the bedroom, while greens and blues tend to be more calming and great for more relaxed spaces.

North-facing natural light might appear less intense (paint might appear a bit darker), and south facing will be brighter (paint might appear a bit lighter).

Try Before You Buy

With Backdrop, you can sample any paint from their catalog with convenient 12×12” adhesive swatches. Just peel, stick, and see what your color could look like in part of your space. Taskrabbit customers can get $15 worth of paint samples FREE right here.

Choose the Right Paint Type

For most interior wall surfaces, we recommend Backdrop’s Interior Standard Finish which is a 6% sheen semi-matte. For bathrooms or kitchens that might get a little more wear, consider Backdrop’s Semi-Gloss Finish, which is a 30% sheen. They also have Cabinet & Door paint, so you can get the right paint for any surface.

Go For It

Don’t get too hung up on the color selection process! Paint is one of the easiest—and most affordable—things to switch up in your space, especially with help from Backdrop

Next up, we’ll outline the how of painting your space. But spoiler: hiring a Tasker is as easy as ordering pizza.
