Living solo is now a deliberate, celebrated choice. With Vogue writing love letters to solo living and “single and thriving” becoming its own aesthetic, more Americans than ever are deciding that a home built around one person’s taste, schedule, and sanity isn’t a consolation prize. It’s a lifestyle.

But independence has never meant doing everything yourself. Without a partner, roommate, or parent around to split the to-do list, solo dwellers are getting comfortable outsourcing the tasks they don’t have the time, tools, or desire to tackle alone. At Taskrabbit, we’re seeing this play out in the data: total completed jobs are up 21% year over year, and the categories most associated with building (and rebuilding) a life on your own terms are climbing right along with it, including Furniture Assembly (+23%), Cleaning (+29%), Yard Work (+23%), and Plumbing Help (+17%).

This year, three distinct stories emerged about how independence is reshaping the American home: the rise of The Independent Home, the quiet confidence of The Solo Homeowner, and the modern ritual of The Post-Breakup Reset.

Shelf-sufficient

Independence, some assembly required

Living alone is no longer treated like a placeholder phase before “real life” starts. People are decorating exactly how they want, turning spare rooms into whatever they actually need them to be, and building homes with zero compromise because there’s no one else’s taste to negotiate with.

We see it in the data: searches and bookings for help moving alone are up 24%, and “by myself” as a search term is up 20%, right alongside first apartment moves up +15%. Mentions of living alone are up 58% year over year, a clear signal that solo households aren’t a phase people are passing through but rather a destination people are settling into.

That confidence is showing up in how people use their extra space, too. Rather than keeping a dusty guest room for occasional visitors, solo dwellers are converting spare square footage into something entirely for themselves. Craft rooms are up 33%, home gyms jumped 59%, saunas rose 35%, and podcast studios–yes, really–are up 90%. Even the foundational tasks of making a space yours are on the rise, with general decorating requests up 57%. Independence, it turns out, looks a lot like a hobby room you never have to share.

diy2k

Happy YOU year

Homeownership has quietly stopped being something people wait to do with a partner. Buying, renovating, and maintaining a house solo has emerged as an independent milestone to achieve on your own timeline.

Rather than waiting around for a partner to handle the “practical” side of owning a home, solo homeowners are building their own support systems and calling in help exactly when they need it. Handyman bookings are up 74% year over year, furniture assembly is up 47%, and home maintenance requests are up 41%. Even the less glamorous parts of homeownership are getting outsourced strategically: gutter cleaning is up 12%, and help settling into a first home is up 8%.

The workload of homeownership stays the same, but who’s expected to handle it has shifted. Instead of waiting on a partner, solo homeowners are assembling their own bench of specialists, one task at a time.

Out with the old, in with the you

It’s not you, it’s me…. and only me 🙂

Breakups change a relationship status and tend to trigger a full reset of the home. When one person moves out, the person staying behind is increasingly treating the space as a chance to rebuild it around their own identity, not their ex’s.

The data backs up what people have been saying for years: the post-breakup renovation is the new post-breakup haircut. Searches and bookings tied to a “fresh start” are up 39%, downsizing to a space that actually fits one person is up 10%, and the deep clean that marks a true reset is up 44%. For the people ready to go further than a deep clean, mattress removal is up 105% and bed frame disassembly is up 91%, proving that for a lot of people, a clean break starts with clearing out anything that still feels like someone else’s.

A breakup can be the momentum of a fresh start. Reclaiming your square footage is about setting the stage for whatever comes next, entirely on your own terms.

Home, on your own terms

Independence doesn’t mean isolation, and outsourcing the hard parts of home isn’t a failure to “adult” correctly. It’s how people are actually pulling off living life on their own terms.

The story of the modern home is no longer written for couples by default. As living solo shifts from a temporary phase into a deliberate destination, our living spaces are reflecting a much larger cultural shift: that creating a home on your own timeline isn’t a compromise. It’s a sanctuary, a milestone, and a clear declaration of independence.

Data based on Taskrabbit booking and search trends, January – July 2025 vs. January – July 2026.

Being single used to be something you just got through, but somewhere along the way, “single” stopped being a status people were waiting to upgrade.
