Once they\u2019re mobile, you will feel more comfortable knowing you\u2019ve taken precautions to keep them safe.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Babyproofing basics: Living spaces<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"840\" height=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/www.taskrabbit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/2-Baby-Proofing-Content.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.taskrabbit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/2-Baby-Proofing-Content.png 840w, https:\/\/www.taskrabbit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/2-Baby-Proofing-Content-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Secure furniture<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mount\/secure to the wall all furniture that your baby may attempt to pull up on or climb, including but not limited to:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bookshelves<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dressers<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entertainment centers<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TVs\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may want to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taskrabbit.com\/services\/organization?utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=&amp;utm_campaign=&amp;utm_content=&amp;utm_term=babyproofstorage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">temporarily store away<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taskrabbit.com\/services\/shopping-delivery\/drop-off-donations?utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=&amp;utm_campaign=&amp;utm_content=&amp;utm_term=babyproofdonate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">donate items<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can be easily knocked over or that the baby may be tempted to use as a walker, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tall lamps<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bar stools<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freestanding coat rack<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bar cart<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any exposed musical instruments<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any sculptures or reachable heavy artwork<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also consider securing extension cords, long cables, and any other wiring (often TV or WIFI-related) that is floor level or low down so that the baby doesn\u2019t get tangled up once they\u2019re on the move.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Secure windows<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Window safety guards and\/or safety bars are important particularly if you have older windows that open widely. It may not be possible for you to get cordless window shades\/blinds, so the next best thing is to mount hooks around which you can wrap the cords. You may want to consider proactively removing the cord\u2019s pulls, which can become a choking hazard if loosened.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Secure staircases<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the personal preference of some parents to create a safe, contained area where the baby can hang out by setting up gates within or between rooms. But it is essential to install gates across stairways, at the top and at the bottom. To prepare:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can move pots, pans, Tupperware, plastic spoons, measuring cups, and other objects ripe for acoustic drumming to lower drawers and cabinets where babies can safely explore.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should move up and away plastic bags, plastic wrap, rubber bands, sharp knives, scissors, glassware\u2013and other objects you don\u2019t want the baby getting their hands on.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a pantry closet or cupboard, the items stored there may be tempting to curious babies since they often represent many different shapes and colors.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Move anything breakable or heavy up high, such as glass containers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure that containers storing pasta, nuts, or other choking hazards are out of reach.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your baby may take an interest in the contents of your fridge and freezer.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure alcohol and other substances, such as medicine, are out of reach.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your condiments in glass containers are currently stored on lower shelves, swap their places with plastic bottles or containers that are harmless if your baby gets into them.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Other kitchen tips include:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep the dishwasher locked\u2013once a baby can reach the buttons, they may enjoy starting and stopping it, or pulling down the door and sitting on it<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep utensils pointed down in the dishwasher to prevent the baby from grabbing the sharp part of a knife or even a fork<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lock the oven door and knobs of your stove if possible<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put latches on cabinets where you don\u2019t want the baby going through contents<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider your options for keeping your baby away from your pet\u2019s bowls\u2013such as bowls that are baby-safe, or moving the bowls into a gated area. A latch for the diaper pail<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can prevent this! Many diaper pails have locks already, but an extra layer of babyproofing will offer a deterrent. Same goes for other garbage bins.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toilets are similarly tempting to small hands; while you can train your baby to not go fishing in the bowl, you can more easily secure it with a latch.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-slip bath mats are a safety precaution for the whole family, but especially for your baby. Some parents choose to put a covering on the tub faucet to protect the baby from hitting their head on it as they become more active during bath time.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Securing substances<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While these are most commonly found in the bathroom, your storage situation may require you to distribute where you keep toxic or dangerous items (bathroom, kitchen, garage, linen closet). Move items to an out of reach location, if possible secured with a latch. For example:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicine<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamins<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleaning supplies<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nail polish remover<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rubbing alcohol<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detergent<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scissors<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Razors<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Babyproofing basics: Outdoor space<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a good precaution to put gates in any exterior door frame if you go come and go frequently or like to leave the door open for fresh air (such as a porch or terrace). If you have a backyard, make sure your gates are secured. If you have a pool, the best practice is to surround it with a fence with a latch that the baby can\u2019t reach.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s wonderful if you have flora and fauna in your outdoor space but if you don\u2019t want your baby to, say, pluck all the growing veggies in your garden beds, you can use gardening wire to create a barrier to keep the baby away from more delicate greenery.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-coblocks-dynamic-separator is-style-line\" style=\"height:50px\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While, not an exhaustive list, hopefully, this will give you a great running start to trying to keep up with your baby! <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ikea.com\/us\/en\/cat\/safety-16249\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IKEA has affordable starter kits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to put the suggestions here into action.
