We’re Live in Jacksonville, Memphis, & New Haven!

It’s official — TaskRabbit is live today in three new cities: Jacksonville, FL; Memphis, TN; and New Haven, CT! Whether it’s help moving and unpacking, mounting a TV, or assembling furniture, our Taskers are fired up to help more people around the country do away with their home to-do’s.

Thanks for the warm welcome, Jacksonville, Memphis, and New Haven. We’re excited to get to know you! We asked local Taskers for a few fun facts about the newest cities in the TaskRabbit community.

Jacksonville, FL

  • At 875 square miles, Jacksonville is the largest city by area in the continental United States. (For reference, NYC is just 302 square miles and LA is 469).
  • Each year, Jacksonville hosts the “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party,” the Florida-Georgia college football game.
  • The Jacksonville Jazz Festival, the second-largest jazz festival in the country, has hosted stars like Miles Davis, Tony Bennett, and Michael Buble.

Memphis, TN

  • The city is named after the ancient Egyptian capital.
  • Piggly Wiggly opened here in 1916 as the first self-service grocery store in America. Prior to this, shoppers had to hand a list to grocers, who would then go gather the items requested. (An early version of TaskRabbit?)
  • Memphis is the home of one of four major BBQ styles (“Memphis BBQ”) — a result of its status as a major port city. While other southern cities were limited by local ingredients, Memphis could ship in molasses via the Mississippi River, which gave the BBQ its distinctive sweet taste.

New Haven, CT

  • Best known as the home of Yale University, New Haven is also the birthplace of the lollipop, frisbee, fire sprinkler, and phone book.
  • The United States’ first hamburger was served at Louis’ Lunch, a restaurant that opened in 1985 and still operates today.
  • New Haven boasts its own style of pizza, “apizza,” which locals say is the best in the United States. The “a” in front of “pizza” comes from a dialect from the Naples region of Italy, where many of New Haven’s immigrants migrated from.
