The Weekend Routine: Duke Moose, Wedding Photographer & Pro Third Wheel

The Weekend Routine Blog Cover

At TaskRabbit, we love the weekends. They may not be any less productive than hectic weekdays, but they have a different kind of pace and energy. In the Weekend Routine series, we take a look at how the people who inspire us use their weekends to find a balance between planning for the week ahead and taking a break from the daily grind.

Duke Moose says he was made for the job of being the best third wheel known to man. After a passion for wildlife photography led to shooting weddings a couple years ago, Duke has traveled across Greece, Switzerland, Canada, and the United States to capture love in some of the most beautiful places on earth. His busiest day? Saturday, of course. Read on for a peek into the hectic weekend of a wedding photographer and how Duke unwinds when he’s not behind the camera.

Friday

Who knows what. A Friday evening usually begins with editing and then going out to eat with friends or family. Since every week is different, I don’t have a set schedule all the time. The only thing that’s guaranteed is editing photos. I’m not one to go to bed early so I’ll usually stay up late doing who knows what. With my job, every day can feel like a weekend. In fact, the weekends are usually the busiest times so it seems like weekdays sometimes are the real weekends!

Saturday

Wedding day. I love weddings, but the days are very, very long and extremely tiring. When I’m done, I usually have a lot of back pain from standing and shooting for so many hours. But once I get to the venue and the festivities begin, I typically am having the time of my life so I don’t mind it at all.

Pre-ceremony prep. Before I get to the wedding I make sure to clear my memory cards and charge my camera and flash battery. Then I look over my notes about the big day. I make sure to know where the wedding is, what time I need to be set up by, and other details so I know exactly what is going on.

The late-night scene. If it’s not a wedding day, I love to do something active, like going to trampoline parks, lunch, or the local Utah Jazz game if they’re playing that night. I love seasonal activities as well. Haunted houses are one of my favorite things, and I love driving around looking at people’s Christmas lights! Since I’m such a night owl, the best part of the weekends is that everything is open later. I always like having options of things to do when I want to get out of the house and have the bug for an activity.

Sunday

Saturdays are for shooting, Sundays for editing. Sundays are always filled with editing. I start as soon as I wake up, with a break for breakfast at my favorite place, Sunshine Cafe in North Salt Lake, Utah.

Planning day. I use Sundays to plan and schedule my week. I check to see what day I have photoshoots or days I might be traveling to my next photoshoot. If I’m traveling, I also make sure to set aside time to prepare for that.

Dining out. Since my weekends are so busy, I usually don’t have any “must-do” activities. If I have some free time, I try to visit restaurants in town. But if I am going to do something you can always catch me at a restaurant. It really is one of my favorite things to do!
